Anal Fistula
It is a separate path between the anal canal and the perianal skin, and the stool passes through this path and causes foul-smelling discharge. The most common cause is poorly treated anal abscesses. It is also seen in inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s. Diagnosis is made by rectal examination and, if necessary, endorectal ultrasonography or MRI. The way of treatment is determined according to the relationship of the fistula tract with the muscles that enable us to hold the stool. Its treatment is surgery.
Fistulotomy: The fistula tract is cut surgically and left to heal.
Seton procedures: where a piece of surgical thread called a seton is placed in the fistula and left there for several weeks to help it heal before a further procedure is carried out to treat it
LIFT Method: The fistula tract is found and ligated between the inner and outer sphincter.
LAFT Method: It is the method of closing the fistula tract with a laser probe.
